Ashley:
The opening reminded me of days when I would listen to Remembering Sunday “because it made me feel something else”.
The vocal echoes and quick verse around Sophia had me feeling like I was about to hear Down by Blink-182 mashed with missing someone so close who’s now so far.
Tommy’s Face:
Underoath, especially Define The Great Line, was a formative album for me.Hearing that scream was a balm on a heart that sometimes stutters at the idea I might be closer to being an Elder Emo.
It almost makes me overlook the meaning of the song. Driving drums and a slick guitar line hold this halfway heartbreak as close as you wish you could hold the one that got away.
Me and my brother were musicians. I’m a drummer and he plays guitar. This song reminds me of how I always wished I could write an acoustic ballad but never could.
It’s a great song in memory of something we had and wish could have been more. The possibility hurts and singing the lyrics almost feels like a belated confession that maybe one day will relieve the sting when you look at that box of old memories.
Red Light Kisser
Is your friend really over me?
THE anthem you blast when you finish lacing up your knee high converse and turn the key in your beat up car on a Friday night. About to pick up some friends, maybe that girl/guy you like?
Is the moment gonna last? If the band plays their soft song will it be enough?
Classic rhythms and melodic vocals bring you in like a wave and keep you comforted.
Pamela
An interesting little piece that’s eloquent double bass and repeating lyrics sets a scene of stealing your uncles Sports Illustrated cover of Pamela and keeping it hidden just behind that HIM or Senses Fail poster in your room. Sitting in your bed after kicking your skater shoes against your dresser too hard and wondering if it’s more emo to get a vinyl player or a new cd player and beat it up before school tomorrow
it feels like an oddly reflective moment for an emo kid but those barbed wire tattoos will live in my memory rent free forever so that counts for something.
Don’t Listen to my voicemail.
Oh it hurts How we all have probably done this…well at least twice.
The chug through the pre-chorus/chorus is a volume button breaker.
compressed explanations after each verse are almost too relatable and then those clean chords sing through to remind us that hey… we kinda passed out in the back of a car or the front lawn… or in my friends parents bed.
But maybe we can make a mistake again even if we broke up? This song rocks.
Grl Like U
Reminded me of bands like rocket to the moon, never shout never, bands with more upbeat and pop lyrics.
It’d be an easy one to sing when thinking of that person you love. when you just left their house or are about to see them. It’s a great motivator of before or after for trying to ‘get the girl’
Tambourine breaks are always cool and that will never change. Even more timeless? Clapping breaks.
We all hate the dreaded friendzone and this song teaches us to leap that hurdle and ask the right questions. A bop in essence.
Rooftops REMIX
A lot like ‘Ashley’ this feels original. This is Your Broken Hero. Not something that feels like something ELSE. The vocals are so well done with the twists and turns through the chorus. The unexpected screams and squealing guitar was a surprise that landed perfectly.
kids these days say “this song has the sauce.” It’s something sweet, memorable, catchy.
With me you’re home
The soft solid strumming to the echoing vocals about choosing to change how we feel are a journey. To make a decision to give everything to someone else in an unfamiliar place and then call it home. This was another solid slow, short song that would have brought me comfort on more than a few occasions while I was dramatically skating away from a break up at the park.
Cus we all know. If your headphones are blasting a cool song while you walk away, you are ten times cooler. Thems the rules
Love story (Matt’s Version)
We all know covers of TSwift rule. This is no exception. You know the song, no it doesn’t take away your cred as an Elder Emo. If Our Last Night and Your Broken Hero can do covers of TSwift then you can bang your head to it. Nuff said.
This album was the first In a while that when I heard the opening track I actually sat down and listened to the whole thing.
For the first time in over a decade I sat down and reviewed as I listened and enjoyed. So. No matter what anyone else might think, I hope that Your Broken Hero will see this and remember at least one Emo that’s feeling a little too old sometimes is going to bust out this album and feel better about everything in life, Past and present, thanks to all your hard work. So thank you for maybe one last Emo album? (I hope you make more)
A huge shout out to all of the big name bands that changed my life as ...
